Aerotel,
Ltd.
Aerotel, Ltd. Aerotel, Ltd. is a privately-held Israeli
company, founded in 1985 by Zvi Kamil and the investor
Eli Nhaissi. The company concentrates its
activity in telecommunications and medical technology.
The telecommunications division specializes in voice processing
systems for voice mail and other information-based applications.
In addition to having developed the system for prepaid
calling cards, it is one of the recognized leaders in
pulse-to-tone conversion technology, selling its products
in over 30 countries. The medical technology division
has two lines of equipment: the HIPEC, which assists physicians
in analyzing electrocardiograms, and the Heart Line, which
facilitates remote patient monitoring, both for diagnostic
and emergency applications.
The leading force in Aerotel is Zvi Kamil, who serves
as President and Eli Nhaissi as Chairman of the Board,
Zvi Kamil directs the operations of
the telecommunications division. Prior to founding Aerotel,
Kamil served as Chief Scientist of Israel's Ministry of
Communications, and held senior positions at Elscint,
Rafael (one of Israel's leading defense contractors),
and the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission. He has been
recognized with the Israel Defense Award and is the holder
of eight patents. Assisting Kamil on the business side
is Professor Haim Ben-Shahar, formerly President of Tel
Aviv University, and a renowne economic authority.
Kamil filed his patent application on systems for enabling
prepayment for telephone calls in 1985, and the patent
(#4,706,275) was issued long before others recognized
the multiplicity of benefits which such a system brings
to the marketplace. Aerotel's initial efforts to license
the system, in the late 1980's, were unsuccessful because,
at that time, few appreciated the value of the product.
But once competition in the long distance industry intensified
in the early 1990's, participants increasingly sought
new products to differentiate themselves from competitors,
and interest in prepaid telephone calls exploded almost
overnight.
Upon concluding its first license agreement with Bell
Atlantic Verizon in the fall of 1994, Aerotel appointed Aerotel
U.S.A. Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary, to accept and
process applications for licenses to the patented system.
From its offices in 608 Fifth Ave,New York NY 10020
conducts all licensing operations, from the processing
of applications to the collection of fees.
